Qatar Reopens Airspace Amid Ongoing Iranian Strikes in Gulf

Qatar has partially reopened its airspace following a series of Iranian missile and drone strikes that led to the grounding of flights. This reopening comes as the United States-Israeli military campaign against Iran enters its second week.
Airspace Reopening Details
The Qatar Civil Aviation Authority announced the limited reopening on a recent Friday. This limited capacity will allow flights to operate through designated navigational contingency routes, in coordination with Qatari armed forces. However, scheduled commercial flights remain suspended pending further announcements.
Types of Flights Resumed
- Passenger evacuation flights
- Air cargo services
Passengers with existing bookings are advised to check with their airlines for the latest updates before heading to the airport. Qatar Airways announced plans to operate repatriation flights on March 7, targeting several major European cities.
Impact of the Ongoing Conflict
Sustained Iranian attacks have seen Qatar’s airspace closed since February 28, due to precautionary measures aimed at ensuring safety and security. The Ministry of Defence reported that Qatar has been struck by 14 ballistic missiles and four drones since the conflict escalated.
As a result, over 2,000 flights have been canceled at Hamad International Airport since the onset of hostilities.
Wider Aviation Disruption in the Gulf
The impact of the Iranian strikes is being felt across the Gulf region. Major airlines and airports are grappling with operational challenges due to the conflict.
- Emirates Airline: Operating a reduced schedule with approximately 30,000 passengers transported from Dubai.
- Dubai International Airport: The world’s busiest airport has faced nearly 4,000 flight cancellations.
- Kuwait: Reported physical damage at its airport, leading to further flight disruptions and closures.
As the situation evolves, multiple airlines continue adapting their operations. An estimated total of 23,000 flights have been canceled since the start of these hostilities, underlining the significant impact of the ongoing military actions in the region.
