TransLink Addresses FIFA World Cup Station Closures in Vancouver

TransLink has addressed concerns regarding potential SkyTrain station closures during the FIFA World Cup in Vancouver. Officials confirmed that Stadium–Chinatown and Yaletown–Roundhouse stations will remain operational during match days. However, pedestrian access to BC Place from these stations will be limited.
SkyTrain Station Access Details
According to spokesperson Jawn Jang, trains will continue to stop at both stations. Nonetheless, the secure event perimeter around BC Place will restrict access to certain exits.
- The Expo Boulevard side entrance at Stadium–Chinatown will be closed on match days.
- Riders will be redirected to use designated routes to access BC Place.
If you plan to attend a FIFA match using the Canada Line, Jang advises transferring at Waterfront Station. From there, switch to the Expo Line to reach Main Street-Science World Station, which is within the FIFA control zone.
Increased Transit Services for FIFA World Cup
To accommodate the expected surge in rider demand during the tournament, TransLink is enhancing service levels. The transportation authority is set to implement the following changes:
- Approximately 600 additional bus trips will be added.
- Increased SkyTrain frequency before and after matches.
- Extended SkyTrain operating hours on match days, with service available until 2:15 a.m. for 9 p.m. matches.
Advocacy for Improved Transit Options
Scarr recalled that significant transit developments were made for previous international events, such as the Expo Line for Expo 86 and the Canada Line for the 2010 Olympics. She criticized the delay in the Broadway SkyTrain project, expected to finish in 2027, which is outside of the control of the city and TransLink.
In response, Scarr advocates for the implementation of more dedicated bus lanes. She believes that enhancing bus transit will serve as the second-best option for effectively transporting people while waiting for more rapid transit expansions to be realized.
