Chris Wheeler, the esteemed executive chef of Stoke Park Country Club, Spa & Hotel, in Buckinghamshire, has passed away. The announcement of his untimely death came from the Hurlingham Club in Fulham, London, where he served as executive chef since January 2025.
Chef Chris Wheeler’s Early Career
Wheeler’s culinary journey began after a nine-month work placement in France, which shifted his aspirations from becoming a zoo-keeper to a chef. After college, he trained with notable French chef Jean-Christophe Novelli at Le Provence in Lymington. At just 20, he was offered a head chef position, but chose to pursue a role as a pastry chef at a hotel in Surrey.
Later, he reunited with Novelli at the Four Seasons Hotel in Mayfair, earning five AA rosettes. Wheeler contributed significantly to the Novelli restaurant empire, helping to open Maison Novelli in Clerkenwell in 1996. He remained with Novelli until the business faced difficulties in the early 2000s.
Tenure at Stoke Park
In 2003, Wheeler joined Stoke Park as executive chef, where he significantly impacted the culinary landscape. Notably, he crafted the cake featured in the 2004 film “Layer Cake.” He also made headlines in 2006 by running the London Marathon dressed as a chef while flipping pancakes, completing the race in six hours and 50 minutes.
Wheeler earned recognition as Chef of the Year at the 2016 Hotel Cateys, celebrated for his leadership and excellence. Additionally, he showcased his culinary talent on the show Great British Menu, presenting dishes like ‘The Ashes Over and Down Under.’ His debut cookbook was published in 2018, reflecting on his journey with Novelli and his time at Stoke Park.
