OBCT Hosts Engaging Panel for International Women’s Day

The Ontario Building and Construction Tradeswomen (OBCT) is set to host an engaging panel discussion in honor of International Women’s Day (IWD), which falls on March 8. Titled “Women Leading the Way – An OBCT IWD Panel,” this informative webinar will be held on March 5 at 6 p.m. EST and is open to tradeswomen in Ontario.

Event Highlights

This year’s IWD theme, “Give to Gain,” emphasizes the importance of reciprocity and collective support within the skilled trades sector. The OBCT aims to create a platform for sharing experiences, offering practical advice, and fostering a sense of community among tradeswomen.

Leadership Beyond Titles

According to Karen Pullen, chair of the OBCT, leadership in the trades is not solely defined by formal titles. It can manifest through various actions, such as:

  • Speaking up on job sites.
  • Mentoring apprentices.
  • Dedicating efforts towards safer work environments.
  • Offering support to fellow tradeswomen.

These everyday leadership roles are crucial for transforming workplaces and promoting equity in the industry.

Creating Opportunities

When tradeswomen actively uplift one another, they pave the way for expanded opportunities in the profession. “Giving isn’t about losing; it’s about creating greater opportunities for all,” emphasizes the OBCT. By strengthening the community, the entire construction industry can thrive.

Advocating for Equity and Safety

As IWD approaches, the OBCT reminds us that gender equity requires ongoing vigilance. Kate Walsh, OBCT program manager, reiterates the importance of mutual support and accountability in the workplace. Key initiatives include:

  • Mandatory Anti-Discrimination and Anti-Harassment training for all workers.

Such measures aim to foster safe and respectful job sites, ensuring that women in trades have the resources and environment necessary to succeed.
