Metro Dig-Out Closes Businesses, Services; Non-Essential Travel Discouraged

St. John’s is currently facing significant disruptions due to heavy snowfall. Although no State of Emergency has been declared, the city has taken decisive measures to ensure public safety and effective snow removal.
Business and Service Closures in St. John’s
All municipal offices in St. John’s are closed as snow-clearing operations continue. Staff members are expected to work from home whenever possible. The City Hall and recreational facilities will remain shut until further notice.
Caution Urged for Residents
Residents are advised to limit their travel to essential trips only. This guideline aims to provide snow-clearing crews the necessary space to operate efficiently. The provincial government buildings in the greater St. John’s area are also closed for the day.
Impacts on Education and Transportation
- Memorial University, College of the North Atlantic, and the Marine Institute remain closed.
- K-12 schools are already observing winter break and are not in session.
- Metrobus and GoBus services are suspended, at least for the morning.
Weather Conditions and Their Effects
The Avalon Peninsula has experienced exceptional snowfall, with an additional 55 cm reported over the weekend. Meteorologist Wanda Batten noted that the low-pressure system moved closer to Avalon than predicted, leading to snow accumulation beyond expectations. This January is on track to become one of the snowiest months recorded.
Additional Restrictions
A weather-related parking ban remains in effect outside the downtown area. Furthermore, there will be no garbage collection for the day as services are pushed back.
The city is vigilantly monitoring conditions, though officials have maintained that a State of Emergency is not necessary at this moment. Continuous snowfall and its impact on travel and services pose challenges for the residents of St. John’s as they navigate this winter weather.
