Diageo and Ontario Secure Crown Royal’s LCBO Availability, Plant Closure Still Looms

Ontario has confirmed that Crown Royal will remain available in its liquor stores, thanks to an agreement with Diageo. The company, which owns the popular whiskey brand, has committed to invest nearly $23 million in various sectors, including alcohol and agriculture.

Details of the Agreement

The announcement was made following several months of negotiations between the Ontario government and Diageo. Premier Doug Ford stated that this financial investment aims to strengthen supply chains in the province. It is also intended to support the local community in Amherstburg, which has been affected by the upcoming closure of the Diageo bottling plant.

Impact of the Plant Closure

Diageo plans to close its Amherstburg bottling facility by February 2026, resulting in job losses for nearly 200 employees. Mayor Michael Prue of Amherstburg mentioned that while there has been a closure agreement signed by the workers, the focus now shifts to future developments regarding the facility.

  • $11 million for purchasing grain spirits from Greenfield in Johnstown
  • $5 million dedicated to Ontario-based marketing efforts

Future Prospects

With this agreement, Crown Royal’s availability through the LCBO remains secure. The funds are expected to have a lasting positive effect on local production and community support in the affected regions.

The investment illustrates Diageo’s commitment to the province and its economy, despite the challenges posed by plant closures. This strategic collaboration aims to not only maintain Crown Royal’s market presence but also foster growth in Ontario’s agricultural and local production sectors.
