First Wetherspoon Opens Outside UK and Ireland: What to Expect

In a significant development for the British pub chain industry, Wetherspoon has opened its first location outside the UK and Ireland. The new pub, named Castell de Santa Bàrbera, is located at Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernandez Airport in Spain.

Details of the New Wetherspoon Location

Launched on a recent Monday, Castell de Santa Bàrbera marks Wetherspoon’s expansion into continental Europe. The pub is strategically positioned airside in the airport’s departures area and will operate daily from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Wetherspoon’s new establishment spans nearly 1,000 square feet of customer space, featuring both indoor seating and an outdoor terrace for those who smoke or vape. This move aligns with the company’s goal of attracting travelers and expats in the region.

Menu Offerings

The menu at Castell de Santa Bàrbera includes several well-known Wetherspoon staples, such as:

  • Breakfast dishes
  • Burgers
  • Pizzas
  • Local specialties like garlic prawns and Spanish omelettes

While real ales are not available, the pub offers a variety of lagers, including:

  • Stella Artois
  • Leffe Blonde
  • Cruzcampo
  • Amstel
  • Guinness

Prices for drinks range from €4.95 (£4.30) to €7.95 (£6.92). A crucial offering is the free refill tea and coffee for €3.30 (£2.87).

Technology and Expectations

Although the Wetherspoon app, popular in the UK and Ireland for ordering, is not yet operational at this location, plans are in place for its implementation soon.

The choice of Alicante for this landmark opening is strategic, considering its popularity among British tourists. Wetherspoon founder, Tim Martin, expressed optimism about the pub attracting a diverse clientele, including returning travelers from the UK.

Future Expansion Plans

Wetherspoon intends to open additional establishments in Europe, including in high-street locations beyond airport constraints. The Costa Blanca area, particularly Alicante, has a large British ex-pat community, making it a fitting choice for this venture.

A Historical Touch

Castell de Santa Bàrbera is named after a historic castle overlooking Alicante, known for its role as a lookout and fortress since the 9th century. This connection to local heritage reflects Wetherspoon’s approach to incorporating regional history in its décor and branding.

With its unique offerings and strategic location, Castell de Santa Bàrbera is likely to become a favored spot for travelers seeking a taste of home before flying out from Alicante. Whether patrons are regular Wetherspoon visitors or new customers, the pub promises a welcoming experience in a familiar setting.
