Disney is set to inject elements of Star Wars into Super Bowl Sunday with a new commercial featuring The Mandalorian and Grogu. This customized 30-second ad, created by director Jon Favreau, showcases a nostalgic homage to the beloved characters from the hit series.
Mandalorian & Grogu: A Nostalgic Tribute
The commercial features a gravely-voiced narrator reminiscent of classic Americana advertising. In a delightful twist, The Mandalorian and Grogu are depicted traveling in a carriage pulled by Tauntauns. This light-hearted spot aims to rekindle audience memories and affection for the iconic duo, who first charmed viewers over six years ago on Disney+.
Behind the Scenes
Favreau directed the ad in live-action, collaborating with the Lucasfilm creature team, skilled puppeteers, and Industrial Light & Magic (ILM). This initiative highlights the special effects expertise that has become synonymous with the franchise.
Upcoming Film Release
The anticipated film, Mandalorian & Grogu, is scheduled for release on May 22. Pedro Pascal reprises his role as Din Djarin, the protective guardian of Grogu, a character who embodies the Force and requires guidance. The cast also includes well-known names like Sigourney Weaver and Jeremy Allen White.
A New Chapter for Lucasfilm
This film marks the first Star Wars feature to reach theaters in nearly seven years, following J.J. Abrams’ The Rise of Skywalker in December 2019. The release of Mandalorian & Grogu signifies a transformative period for Lucasfilm. The studio, originally founded by George Lucas, was sold to Disney in 2012.
Recently, Kathleen Kennedy stepped down as the longtime president of Lucasfilm. In her place, Lucas protégé Dave Filoni and business executive Lynwen Brennan will steer the company into its next chapter.
Creative Team
Jon Favreau, the creator of The Mandalorian, not only directed the feature but also co-wrote the script with Filoni. At last year’s Star Wars Celebration, Pascal shared his memorable experience in the writers’ room with Favreau and Filoni. He recalled the excitement he felt when he first saw the impressive storyboards for the initial season of Mandalorian, which left a lasting impact on him.
