Extreme Cold Closes Disneyland and Universal Water Parks in Orlando, USA

A recent winter storm sweeping across the United States has led to unusually low temperatures in Florida. Orlando’s theme parks, particularly Disney World and Universal Studios, have temporarily closed their water parks to handle the severe cold.
Closure of Water Parks in Orlando
The Disney water park Typhoon Lagoon has suspended operations from January 27 until January 29. It is expected to reopen on January 30, but will close again from January 31 to February 2. Meanwhile, Universal’s Volcano Bay will not operate on January 28 and 29.
Theme Parks Remain Open
Despite the water parks closing, the main theme parks continue to welcome visitors. However, the extreme weather has raised concerns among guests. Many tourists are voicing worries about potential ride closures and show cancellations due to the low temperatures, which are predicted to range between 30 and 40 degrees Fahrenheit (about -1°C to 4°C).
- Typhoon Lagoon closed: January 27 – 29
- Reopening: January 30
- Another closure: January 31 – February 2
- Volcano Bay closed: January 28 – 29
Safety Considerations at the Parks
A Disney spokesperson emphasized that the safety and comfort of guests and staff are top priorities, regardless of the weather conditions. During colder days, performers wear additional layers, and animals are given access to climate-controlled areas. Staff continuously monitor conditions to make necessary adjustments.
So far, there have been no announcements regarding the closure of rides apart from the water parks. Previous instances of severe cold have led Disney to modify parades, cancel fireworks, and delay park openings. Attractions with exposed tracks, like Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and Expedition Everest, are particularly sensitive to low temperatures and strong winds.
Weather Alerts and Precautions
Orlando is under a frost advisory, with temperatures potentially dropping to between -7°C and -1°C. According to Fox 35 Orlando, the central Florida region may experience one of the lowest wind chills recorded this weekend.
The official Disney planning guide advises visitors to dress in layers and to prioritize indoor attractions during extreme cold days. Additionally, park stores offer jackets and hoodies for guests needing extra warmth during their visits.
