New Driveway Rule Overview
Under the updated regulations, homeowners can install a single wall-mounted or pedestal EV charger without applying for householder planning permission. This change is aimed at making the transition from petrol and diesel vehicles to electric alternatives smoother and more accessible.
Financial Savings for Homeowners
According to government officials, the new driveway rule could result in savings of up to £1,100 annually for motorists. This financial incentive is expected to encourage more drivers to adopt electric vehicles.
Industry Support for the New Policy
Lewis Gardiner, Operations Director at Osprey Charging Network, praised the changes. He emphasized that the removal of planning permission requirements for EV chargers will lead to reduced costs and faster installation of necessary charging infrastructure.
- Charger size must not exceed 0.2 cubic metres.
- Must be placed at least two metres away from the public highway.
Considerations and Limitations
While the new regulations provide greater flexibility, there are still some limitations. Homeowners in leasehold properties may encounter restrictions from freeholders regarding modifications. Additionally, residents of new-build housing estates might find title deed restrictions affecting their ability to install EV chargers.
Sharing a driveway with neighbors may also pose challenges, potentially leading to disputes regarding installation rights.

The UK is witnessing rapid growth in electric vehicle adoption. Currently, approximately 1.75 million fully electric cars are on the road. Recent data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) indicates that 47,000 new electric vehicles were sold in 2025, marking an 8% increase from 2024.
