Duke Shuts Out JMU 4-0 in Spring Opener

In their season debut, #17 Duke University defeated James Madison University (JMU) 4-0 on Sunday at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center. This victory improves Duke’s record to 2-0, marking their second win against JMU, who stands at 0-1.

Duke’s Strong Start in the Spring Opener

The match against JMU featured Duke claiming the doubles point early. The Blue Devils secured two doubles victories, both ending in scores of 6-3 on courts two and three. Although JMU’s pairing of Zach Fleishman and Aurelien Schmitt led Duke’s Pedro Rodenas and Cooper Williams 5-4 on court one, their match was abandoned when Duke clinched the doubles point.

Duke Dominates Singles Matches

In singles play, Duke continued its momentum by winning the first set on all six courts. The team quickly built their lead with three decisive wins. Rodenas expanded Duke’s lead to 2-0 by defeating Schmitt 6-2, 6-2 on court two.

  • Cooper Williams: 6-2, 6-1 win against Ryan Morgan (Court 1)

With these wins, Duke clinched the match 4-0. On other courts, Fleishman held a 4-3 lead against Dylan Long on court four while Gur Libal was even at 2-2 with Teddy Truwit on court six.

Upcoming Matches for JMU

James Madison will next compete on Saturday, January 24, facing Elon University at 1 p.m. The match will take place at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
