Cold Front Approaches as Cheng Ming-dean Shares “Cloud Street” Image

As Taiwan experiences a significant cold front, the Central Weather Bureau has issued special temperature alerts for multiple regions. This announcement coincides with the onset of the “great cold” period, which marks the coldest time of the year.

Current Cold Front and Alerts

On January 20, 2023, the Central Weather Bureau classified five regions, including New Taipei City and Taipei City, under orange alert status. This indicates a high likelihood of cold temperatures, potentially dropping to 10 degrees Celsius or lower. Other areas, such as Miaoli County and Kinmen County, received a yellow alert for possible temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius.

Cheng Ming-dean and the Cloud Street Phenomenon

Cheng Ming-dean, a former director of the Central Weather Bureau, shared a satellite image on social media that captured the “cloud street” phenomenon. This occurs when strong cold air moves over warmer water, leading to the formation of linear cloud patterns. He noted that the clearest cloud streets were visible over the Sea of Japan.

Understanding Cloud Streets

The phenomenon of cloud streets, or “雲街,” is unique to winter and typically forms under specific atmospheric conditions. Here are key points about cloud streets:

  • Cold air masses traditionally bring dry weather, resulting in clear skies.
  • When these cold air masses encounter warm ocean water, convection occurs.
  • Linear cloud patterns can develop when these small clouds align with the major wind direction.

Cheng explained that the arrangement of these clouds can indicate wind direction and strength—a phenomenon that also illustrates the significant temperature differences at the interface of warm and cold air.

Implications for Taiwan

The emergence of cloud streets near Taiwan suggests that the cold air is advancing towards the region. Social media discussions highlight concerns about the impending drop in temperatures. Residents are advised to prepare for the upcoming cold spell as frigid air arrives.

As the cold front progresses, it is essential for citizens to stay updated with weather alerts from the Central Weather Bureau. Proper precautions are necessary to safeguard health and well-being during this chilly season.
