Trump Administration Halts Immigrant Visas for 75 Countries

The U.S. State Department has announced a significant pause in the processing of immigrant visas for individuals from 75 countries. This measure, guided by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, aims to reassess immigration procedures and address potential public charge concerns.
State Department’s New Immigration Policy
According to Tommy Pigott, the Principal Deputy Spokesperson for the State Department, this decision is a part of a broader initiative to prevent the entry of immigrants who might rely on welfare and public benefits. The suspension specifically targets applicants from nations identified as posing security risks.
Countries Affected by the Visa Processing Pause
- Russia
- Iran
- Afghanistan
- Countries in Africa
This recent policy builds on previous restrictions imposed after an incident involving an Afghan immigrant charged with attacking National Guard members in Washington, D.C. Consequently, the administration has taken measures to limit entry for nationals from 19 countries, which was further expanded by adding five more countries in December.
Implications for Immigrant Applications
As part of these new procedures, all immigrant visa applications from the affected nations will be halted. However, it is essential to note that non-immigrant visas for temporary travel, including tourism and business purposes, remain unaffected.
The pause on processing does not extend to asylum cases, citizenship procedures, or green card applications for individuals from the initial list of 19 nations included in the travel restrictions.
This policy underscores the administration’s commitment to revising immigration protocols to enhance national security and reduce potential burdens on social services.
