Loire-Atlantique on Yellow Alert as Strong Winds Approach

Loire-Atlantique is currently under a yellow alert due to anticipated strong winds. The alert, issued by local authorities, began on Thursday, January 15, 2026, at noon. It is expected to last until around 9 PM that evening, urging caution for all residents.

Forecast and Wind Conditions

Meteorologist Steven Tual has indicated that a classic wind event is approaching. Coastal areas may experience gusts exceeding 100 km/h. Inland locations could also see similar speeds.

  • Coastal gusts: over 100 km/h
  • Inland gusts: nearing 100 km/h

Météo Loire-Atlantique, a popular weather source managed by student Corentin Pinto, suggests that while the wind event should not be excessively severe, vigilance is necessary. Significant gusts between 70 and 80 km/h are expected, reaching up to 90 km/h particularly in the Guérande peninsula.

Rainfall and Flood Risks

In addition to strong winds, the region will also face considerable rainfall. Thursday is forecasted to bring 40 to 60 mm of rain, as the soils in the area are already saturated. This can lead to strong runoff and potential flooding in certain localities.

  • Rain accumulation: 40 to 60 mm throughout Thursday
  • Localized heavier rainfall: 10 to 15 mm, especially around Guérande and Saint-Nazaire

All of Loire-Atlantique will experience rainfall during the afternoon, and the situation is particularly alarming for Basse-Bretagne, where Météo-France has issued an orange alert for rain and flooding.

Safety Precautions

With the risk of falling branches due to high winds, residents are advised to exercise caution. The vegetation and soil have already been weakened by the earlier storm Goretti in January. Ensuring safety during this weather event is paramount.
