Peter Jackson Confirms No ‘Extended-Extended Edition’ of Lord of the Rings

Fans of the iconic Lord of the Rings trilogy have long speculated about the existence of a so-called “Extended-Extended Edition.” This mythical version, often referred to as the “Mithril Cut,” would supposedly include additional footage shot by director Peter Jackson. However, Jackson has definitively put these rumors to rest.

Peter Jackson’s Confirmation

In a recent interview, Peter Jackson confirmed that no such extended version of the film exists. He stated, “Are there great scenes that we never used? The answer is no.” According to Jackson, any additional footage available would only consist of minor clips that would not justify the creation of an Extended-Extended Edition.

Footage and Rumors

Co-writer Philippa Boyens addressed some of the speculation about unseen scenes, specifically mentioning a moment featuring a young, clean-shaven Aragorn during his courtship with Arwen. She noted, “There was that, it was in Lothlórien. But there’s not a lot. There really isn’t.”

Potential Future Projects

While the myth of the Mithril Cut has been debunked, Jackson expressed interest in creating a comprehensive documentary about the filmmaking process. He indicated that he has a wealth of behind-the-scenes footage to explore, including:

  • Alternative takes
  • Bloopers
  • Insights into the mechanics of making the films

Jackson mentioned that he has not yet succeeded in convincing the studio to take on this extensive project, noting it would be a significant undertaking.

Looking Ahead

The idea of a mega-documentary remains alive, even as the concept of an Extended-Extended Edition fades into fantasy. Fans can stay engaged by looking out for further insights from both Jackson and Boyens as they continue to reflect on the legacy of the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

For more details, readers can expect to find a full interview in the upcoming March 2026 issue of El-Balad, available on January 15, 2026.
