Historic North Carolina NASCAR Track Sold for Restoration to Former Glory

A historic NASCAR racetrack in North Carolina has been sold to the International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) with plans for restoration and enhancement. The sale of Rockingham Speedway was confirmed in a news release by the IHRA on December 31, 2025.
Reviving Rockingham Speedway
The 0.94-mile oval track was put on the market shortly after NASCAR’s return in April 2025. That return coincided with Easter weekend, when the Xfinity Series and Truck Series held races at the venue. Both events were well-attended, with tickets for the Saturday race selling out. Notably, the NASCAR Cup Series has not raced at Rockingham since 2004.
Future of NASCAR at Rockingham
While the Cup Series will not race at Rockingham in 2026, the Xfinity Series—rebranded as the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series—and the Truck Series are scheduled to return. Additionally, the ARCA Menards Series will also be part of the event lineup at The Rock. The racing events will take place during the Easter weekend, specifically on April 3-4, 2026.
Plans for Improvement
With a focus on preserving the track’s historical significance, IHRA owner Darryl Cuttell emphasized the commitment to revitalizing Rockingham Speedway. The plan includes:
- Facility upgrades to modernize the venue
- Expanded fan amenities for a better experience
- A variety of entertainment and events at the speedway
Cuttell highlighted the importance of maintaining the essence of Rockingham, saying, “This isn’t about changing what made Rockingham special. It’s about investing in it and ensuring it continues to be a place where great racing and memories are made.”
Notable Drivers and Historical Significance
Many NASCAR legends have raced at Rockingham Speedway, including Dale Earnhardt, Richard Petty, and Jeff Gordon. The track is known for its rich history and old-school charm, often referred to as “The Rock.”
While the sale price of the racetrack has not been disclosed, interest is high as fans await the improvements and upcoming events. Tickets for the 2026 races are currently available for purchase.
