Las Vegas Braces for Rare New Year’s Rainfall

Las Vegas is set for an unusual New Year’s Eve as rain is expected for the first time since 2014. Tourists visiting the Strip will need to be prepared with ponchos and umbrellas. A strong Pacific storm is forecasted to bring rainfall to Southern Nevada, coinciding with the city’s festive celebrations.
Weather Forecast for New Year’s Eve
According to the National Weather Service, there is a 55 percent chance of rain at midnight during the New Year celebrations. Temperatures are projected to be around 50 degrees. Chris Outler from the National Weather Service noted that the heaviest rain is anticipated between 5 PM and 10 PM.
Expected Rainfall Amounts
- Harry Reid International Airport could receive up to 0.10 inches of rain.
- Other areas in the valley may experience rainfall amounts of 0.25 inches or more.
- Previous rainfall records show only a trace amount in 2014.
Historical Rainfall Data
Out of interest, here are some historical rainfall figures related to New Year’s celebrations:
- 2023: The airport recorded 0.12 inches of rain on New Year’s Day.
- 1974: The airport experienced 4.4 inches of snowfall, equivalent to 0.43 inches of rain.
- Average temperatures for New Year’s Eve are typically a high of 56 degrees and a low of 39 degrees.
Impact on Festivities
Despite the rain, major disruptions to fireworks displays are not expected. Wind conditions will play a more significant role than rain when it comes to the visibility and safety of the fireworks. Mild winds are predicted for the holiday weekend.
Event Cancellations
However, not all New Year’s events will proceed as planned. A block party in Boulder City has been canceled due to the forecast of strong rain, low temperatures, and high humidity, leading organizers to prioritize safety for attendees.
As Las Vegas braces for this rare New Year’s rainfall, tourists are reminded to stay prepared while soaking in the celebratory atmosphere amidst the drizzle.
