ICE Arrests 3,500 in Colorado, Including Babies and Elderly

This year, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency has significantly increased its enforcement activities in Colorado. Recent data indicates that from January 20 to October 15, a total of 3,522 individuals were arrested across the state. This total includes people of all ages, with both babies and the elderly being affected.

Escalation of ICE Arrests in Colorado

The number of arrests represents a dramatic increase compared to the previous year, quadrupling during the same period. In fact, the arrests peaked in July 2023, with 548 documented incidents. On average, there have been approximately 393 arrests per month this year, highlighting a stark contrast to the 96 monthly average from the same timeframe in 2024.

Demographics of the Arrests

  • 103 individuals under 18 years old were arrested.
  • 14 individuals over the age of 65 were also detained.
  • The arrested individuals hailed from 72 different countries.

Data analysis reveals that most individuals arrested this year did not have prior criminal convictions. Among those arrested, about 70% have been deported, in line with the enforcement policies established during the Trump administration.

Incident Highlights

One notable incident occurred at a nightclub in Colorado Springs on April 27, where ICE arrested 72 individuals in what became one of the busiest days for immigration enforcement in Colorado. Reports detail aggressive tactics by officers, including the deployment of tear gas and drawn weapons.

Affected individuals included G.R.R., a 32-year-old who had lived in Colorado Springs for a decade. He was detained by ICE due to his undocumented status, despite having a previously dismissed misdemeanor conviction. He spent two months in detention before being released on a $10,000 bond.

Legal challenges to the arrests are also emerging. A federal judge criticized ICE’s tactics as unlawful and mandated changes in how the agency conducts arrests in Colorado. The court ordered ICE to refund bond money to several individuals, including G.R.R.

Geographic Context and Arrest Patterns

ICE’s enforcement actions have predominantly concentrated in Denver County, followed by El Paso, Arapahoe, Mesa, and Adams counties. The overall approach to immigration enforcement has raised concerns in various communities, emphasizing the impact of aggressive deportation policies.

As enforcement strategies evolve, the implications of such operations continue to unfold, highlighting the complexities inherent in immigration policy and its enforcement across the United States.
