Zellers Leads USA’s Charge at World Junior Championship

In a standout performance at the World Junior Championship, 19-year-old Logan Zellers has emerged as a key player for Team USA. Over the weekend, he led his team to a commanding 6-3 victory against Germany and secured a 2-1 win over Switzerland, scoring multiple goals in both matches.

Local Ties and Early Success

Zellers grew up in Maple Grove, Minnesota, just a short distance from the Grand Casino Arena, where the championship is taking place. Reflecting on his return, he stated, “Growing up, going to games here, going to tournaments, it’s so special.” The support from local fans, particularly during critical moments of the games, has been a significant source of motivation for him.

High School and Development

Prior to his success at the World Junior Championship, Zellers honed his skills at Shattuck-St. Mary’s in Faribault, Minnesota. His high school coach, Tom Ward, praised Zellers’ ability to thrive in high-pressure situations. “He’s not afraid of the moment,” Ward noted, emphasizing his adaptability and knack for scoring.

Impressive Statistics

During his two seasons with the Under-18 team at Shattuck, Zellers amassed an impressive 160 points—comprising 76 goals and 84 assists—in just 91 games. “I owe [Shattuck-St. Mary’s] absolutely everything,” he reflected.

Success in the USHL

Zellers’ journey continued in the United States Hockey League (USHL) where he played for the Green Bay team. In his first full season, he achieved remarkable success, being named the 2025 USHL Forward of the Year and the USHL Player of the Year. During this season, he scored 44 goals and recorded 71 points in 52 games.

  • 44 goals: Most in a season by Green Bay since 1980-81.
  • Ranked sixth among USHL players for goals in a season since 2002-03.

Zellers noted that his time in Green Bay was essential for his development, stating, “There’s no timeline on when you have to get to college, so taking that extra year… was crucial for my development.”

As Team USA continues the competition, Zellers is poised to be a defining player. His journey, from local hockey games to prominent international stages, demonstrates his growth and potential in the sport.
