Metro Detroit Braces for New System as Freezing Rain Departs

As freezing rain departs from Metro Detroit, the region is bracing for a new weather system. The hazardous conditions caused by freezing rain across Southeast Michigan improved significantly as temperatures began to rise above freezing. The Winter Weather Advisory was lifted, enhancing travel safety for residents.
Impact of Freezing Rain
Earlier on Friday, freezing rain led to icy conditions, affecting travel across the area. Ice accumulation typically ranged from a tenth to two-tenths of an inch. However, this level was insufficient for widespread damage. Notable ice amounts included:
- Port Huron: 0.21 inches
- Kimball Township, St. Clair County: 0.19 inches
- Mundy Township, Genesee County: 0.16 inches
- Detroit: 0.14 inches
- Adrian, Shelby Township, Novi, West Bloomfield, White Lake: around 0.10 inches
Improving Conditions
By Friday afternoon, temperatures across Metro Detroit steadily climbed, aiding in the melting of residual ice. However, areas in the Thumb and parts of northern regions may still face icy patches into the evening. Drivers are encouraged to exercise caution on untreated surfaces.
Fortunately, no hazardous weather is expected Friday night into Saturday. The upcoming weekend is anticipated to be mostly calm.
Upcoming Weather Changes
Late Saturday night and extending into Sunday, another winter system will affect the region. Rainfall is anticipated, with milder temperatures likely resulting in predominantly rain precipitation in Metro Detroit. The northern areas may experience brief freezing rain before temperatures rise again.
Weather forecasts predict substantial rain on Sunday into Sunday night, with possible heavy downpours at times. A cold front is expected to follow, bringing gusty northwest winds exceeding 40 mph late Sunday night and into Monday. There are also chances of periodic snow showers on Monday and minor accumulations.
Extended Forecast
Colder conditions will persist into the early days of next week, with high temperatures largely remaining below freezing. Wind chills may drop to single digits, particularly Tuesday and Wednesday.
National Weather Update
As Metro Detroit prepares for another weather shift, parts of California are grappling with severe storms. Torrential rain has caused flooding and destruction, requiring evacuation orders in some areas due to mud and debris flows. Such severe weather events across the country remind residents of the importance of safety precautions during winter conditions.
As always, it’s recommended that individuals clear ice and snow from their vehicles and wear appropriate footwear for traction when navigating icy surfaces. Checking on vulnerable neighbors is equally important during these cold spells.
