Storms Disrupt US Travel: Flights Canceled, Roads Closed

Major storms are currently disrupting travel across both coasts of the United States and the upper Midwest. This inclement weather arrives during one of the busiest travel seasons following the holiday period, as millions of Americans return home. As of Friday afternoon, over 1,600 flights have been cancelled nationwide, according to data from FlightAware.

Flight Cancellations and Travel Disruptions

JetBlue Airways reported the highest number of cancellations, with more than 200 flights affected. Delta Air Lines also experienced significant disruptions. Key airports, including LaGuardia, JFK, and Newark in New York City, faced severe delays and cancellations due to forecasted snowfall of up to 9 inches (23 centimeters).

  • Other airports impacted include Detroit, Philadelphia, and Boston.
  • Roads in California are closed due to heavy rains, mudslides, and flooding.
  • The Great Lakes region is facing ice accumulation issues.

Record Travel Figures

The winter disruptions coincide with a projected record of Americans traveling at least 50 miles from home between December 20 and January 1. According to the American Automobile Association (AAA), roughly 109.5 million Americans are expected to drive, a 2% increase from last year. This year, about 8 million are anticipated to fly.

Airline Responses to Severe Weather

JetBlue announced that it would cancel around 350 flights from Friday to Saturday, primarily affecting the Northeast region. The airline is focused on assisting affected customers in rescheduling their travel. United Airlines has introduced a weather waiver to provide flexibility for its customers and reduced its flight schedule in anticipation of the storm.

Southwest Airlines also adjusted its schedule, particularly around New York’s LaGuardia Airport and Baltimore.

Weather Patterns and Advisories

The ongoing severe weather is a result of the return of La Niña, which is often associated with extreme winter conditions. Meteorological experts note that La Niña winters can lead to unpredictable weather patterns, contributing to this holiday season’s volatility.

In New York City, a travel advisory was issued for Friday evening through Saturday as cold temperatures hinder snowmelt, increasing the risk of hazardous roads. Pennsylvania residents were advised to prepare for potential power outages caused by severe winter conditions.

California Weather Woes

California has been battling extensive rainfall and consequent flooding, with numerous road closures statewide. Currently, more than 50,000 homes and businesses are without power, particularly in Northern California.

  • Warnings of flash floods and mudslides remain in effect in several counties, including Los Angeles and Ventura.
  • Mountain areas are facing potential whiteout conditions, jeopardizing travel safety.

Midwest Conditions

The upper Midwest is experiencing a mix of freezing rain, sleet, and snow, which threatens to create hazardous travel conditions extending into New England. Weather forecasts indicate that the region may see significant snowfall and ice accumulation through Saturday morning.

As travel conditions worsen, authorities urge travelers to exercise caution and stay informed about evolving weather patterns.
