Ex-‘South Park’ Writer Purchases Trump-Kennedy Center Domain Names

Toby Morton, a comedian and former writer for South Park and Mad TV, made timely domain name purchases last August. He acquired “trumpkennedycenter.org” and “trumpkennedycenter.com.” His actions came amid discussions to rename The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts after former President Donald Trump.

Renaming Controversy at the Kennedy Center

Earlier this month, the Trump-appointed board of the Kennedy Center announced the addition of Trump’s name to the institution. Subsequently, the Washington D.C. building displayed new lettering that read: “The Donald Trump and The John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts.” This decision has sparked significant backlash.

Background of Domain Purchases

Morton revealed in an interview with the Washington Post that he bought the domain names due to Trump’s actions in changing the Kennedy Center board. He stated, “I thought, Yep, that name’s going on the building. The rest followed on schedule.” Previously, Morton has purchased domain names related to various politicians for parody purposes.

  • Toby Morton is known for his work on South Park (2001-2003) and Mad TV (2006-2007).
  • He identifies as a “Creator of Anti-Fascist Websites” on Instagram.
  • Morton typically buys domain names for $15 to $30.

Legal and Cultural Ramifications

The renaming has raised legal questions as experts suggest it violates a 1964 law established by President Lyndon Johnson. This law designates the Kennedy Center specifically in honor of John F. Kennedy. Critics have responded with actions including:

  • The American College Theatre Festival ended its 58-year partnership with the center.
  • A noted jazz musician canceled a 20-year Christmas Eve concert tradition at the venue.
  • Congresswoman Joyce Beatty (D-OH) filed a lawsuit claiming the board’s vote to change the name is invalid.

Morton expressed concerns about the implications of the change, stating, “The Kennedy Center has always been a cultural institution meant to outlast any one administration or personality.” He argues the focus should be on honoring culture rather than individual egos. With the new domain names, Morton plans to highlight the absurdity of the current situation.
