Thousands Remain Without Power in South Bay After Christmas Storm

As an atmospheric river continues to affect the Bay Area, thousands of residents are struggling without power. Up to 27,000 PG&E customers were reported without electricity as of Thursday night, due to severe weather conditions.
Current Power Outages in the Bay Area
According to PG&E, the outages are widespread. Here’s a breakdown of the affected customers:
- Sonoma County: 7,527 customers
- South Bay: 7,219 customers
- East Bay: 6,755 customers
- Peninsula: 4,860 customers
- San Francisco: 896 customers
- North Bay: 179 customers
The overall number of customers facing outages has decreased since earlier in the day, when more than 35,000 customers were impacted. Strong winds reaching 92 mph have contributed to these power disruptions, particularly in Santa Cruz, Monterey, San Mateo, and Sonoma counties.
Ongoing Weather Concerns
Heavy rains and winds persist, resulting in flooding and significant weather warnings across the region. The National Weather Service has advised that a flood watch remains in effect until 10 p.m. on Friday.
The storm is projected to deliver:
| Location | Expected Rainfall |
|---|---|
| Valleys | 2 to 5 inches |
| Coastal Mountains | 6 to 8 inches |
Flash flooding poses the most significant threat due to these heavy rains. Additionally, a beach hazards statement is in effect until 4 a.m. Friday, warning of dangerous conditions along the Bay Area coast caused by high winds.
