Québec Weather Woes: Unpredictable Conditions Cause Outages

Quebec has been experiencing severe weather conditions that have led to significant disruptions across the region. High winds and freezing rain have caused widespread power outages, creating challenges for residents.
Severe Weather Impacting Quebec
On Friday, strong winds were reported, reaching speeds of up to 90 km/h. These weather conditions followed a night of ice storms in the southern parts of the province.
Power Outages Reported
As of Friday morning, Hydro-Québec indicated that around 61,000 homes were without electricity due to approximately 202 outages. The Montérégie region was notably affected, with over 27,800 homes experiencing disruptions.
School Closures and Transportation Issues
The adverse weather has also impacted education. Three school service centers in the Mauricie area closed their schools due to hazardous road conditions affecting student transportation. The Ministry of Transport warned of slippery roads and reduced visibility, advising caution to commuters.
Road Closures and Traffic Alerts
Significant road closures occurred as a result of the weather. A westbound lane on Highway 40 near Yamachiche was closed during the morning due to an accident. Additional roadways across Northern Quebec faced closures due to difficult driving conditions.
Upcoming Weather Concerns
Environment Canada has issued warnings for heavy rainfall which could further impact several regions. With frozen ground and waterways, predicted rainfall of up to 60 mm, particularly north of Quebec City, raises concerns for local flooding and water accumulation on roads.
Temperature Fluctuations
Despite unseasonably warm temperatures reaching 12 degrees Celsius in Montreal earlier on Friday, a sharp temperature drop is expected by evening, turning rainwater into ice. Wind chill factors could bring temperatures down to -16 degrees Celsius in the metropolitan area overnight.
Preparedness and Safety
- Secure outdoor objects that may be affected by strong winds.
- Stay updated on power outages and road conditions through local updates.
- Exercise caution when traveling; plan routes that avoid closed roads.
As Quebec navigates these challenging weather conditions, residents are urged to prioritize safety and stay informed about updates from local authorities and Environment Canada.
