Four Suspects Charged in New Year’s Eve Bomb Plot in Southern California

Federal authorities in Southern California have disrupted a significant bomb plot aimed at multiple targets, including several U.S. companies. The plot was initially conceived for New Year’s Eve, and four suspects were arrested during a testing operation in the desert near Los Angeles.

Charges Against the Suspects

The four individuals charged in connection with this case are:

  • Audrey Illeene Carroll, 30
  • Zachary Aaron Page, 32
  • Dante Gaffield, 24
  • Tina Lai, 41

All four are residents of the Los Angeles area. During a recent news conference, First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli indicated that additional charges could be forthcoming.

Details of the Bomb Plot

According to officials, Carroll devised a schemed plan to execute bombings at five commercial locations across Southern California. These targets were described as “Amazon-type” logistical centers. The plot involved the use of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) concealed within backpacks.

Operational Plans

The plan included specific instructions for manufacturing these explosive devices. The group intended for multiple bombs to detonate simultaneously as the clock struck midnight on New Year’s Eve. Moreover, two members of the crew considered launching future attacks on Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents and their vehicles.

Surveillance and Evidence

Authorities captured aerial surveillance footage that portrayed the suspects handling a large black object in the desert prior to their arrests. Their campsite was littered with bomb-making materials such as:

  • PVC pipes
  • Potassium nitrate
  • Charcoal and charcoal powder
  • Sulfur powder
  • Fuse materials

The suspects practiced their attack in the desert, where they tested their devices. They reportedly possessed all necessary components to create a functional bomb.

Arrests and Further Investigations

In addition to the four individuals arrested in Southern California, a fifth suspect was detained in New Orleans for allegedly planning a related attack. The FBI is thoroughly investigating the connections among the suspects and their plans.

Community Response

The Los Angeles police department underscored its commitment to community safety irrespective of differing views on federal immigration policies. Chief Jim McDonnell emphasized that the successful intervention in this bomb plot reflects the collaborative efforts of local and federal law enforcement agencies.

The suspects are scheduled to face a court hearing in Los Angeles shortly. Their arrests signify a critical action taken to prevent potential harm to the community during a significant holiday period.
