Prosecutors Charge Four in Southern California New Year’s Eve Attack Plot

Federal authorities have arrested four individuals connected to an extremist group allegedly plotting bombing attacks in Southern California on New Year’s Eve. The suspects, identified as Audrey Carroll, Zachary Page, Dante Gaffield, and Tina Lai, are linked to the anti-capitalist organization named the “Turtle Island Liberation Front” (TILF).

Details of the Arrest

The arrests occurred last week in Lucerne Valley, near the Marine Corps base in Twentynine Palms, California. All four suspects hail from the Los Angeles area.

Charges Filed

Each individual faces serious charges, including conspiracy and possession of unregistered destructive devices. Bill Essayli, the First Assistant U.S. Attorney, announced during a press conference that more charges may follow as investigations continue.

Alleged Plot Details

According to court documents, the plan involved planting IEDs across five locations simultaneously at midnight on New Year’s Eve. These attacks were aimed at two specific U.S. companies. The plot was described in a handwritten document titled “Operation Midnight Sun,” which Carroll allegedly provided to a confidential source for the FBI.

Bomb-Making Evidence

Evidence presented in court highlighted a desert campsite where various bomb-making materials were found. Investigators reported the presence of:

  • PVC pipes of various sizes
  • Suspected potassium nitrate
  • Charcoal and charcoal powder
  • Sulfur powder
  • Fuse materials

Agents apprehended the suspects as they attempted to construct the devices under a tent, which was reportedly meant to shield their activities from sunlight.

Communication and Ideology

The suspects reportedly utilized a Signal chat group named “Order of the Black Lotus.” This platform served as a forum for discussing their radical objectives and the bombing scheme.

Further Investigations

During a search of Carroll’s home, investigators discovered posters linked to TILF. Some of the messages included “DEATH TO ICE” and “DEATH TO AMERICA, LONG LIVE TURTLE ISLAND & PALESTINE.”

Authorities believe they have arrested all individuals directly involved in this plot, but they continue to investigate the group’s wider membership. The suspects are anticipated to appear in court later today.
