Darts Legend Returns to World Championship After Overcoming Bankruptcy

Mervyn King is making a significant return to the World Darts Championship after enduring a challenging period marked by bankruptcy. At 59, King is set to face Ian White in the first round at Alexandra Palace, promising an exciting matchup for darting fans.

Darts Legend’s Journey Through Adversity

King’s recent struggles include being declared bankrupt earlier this year. He has long been a prominent figure in the darts world, especially during the 2000s. King reached the finals of two BDO World Championships and secured victory at the 2004 World Masters.

Life Changes and Financial Challenges

Transitioning to the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC), he reached the semi-finals of both the World Championship and the World Matchplay. Unfortunately, he faced significant setbacks, including the loss of his PDC Tour card and a staggering tax bill exceeding £500,000, leading to his insolvency declaration in the High Court of Justice in London.

To sustain his finances during the pandemic, King took on the role of an Amazon delivery driver. Despite these efforts, he and his wife, Tracey, found themselves fearing the loss of their home. King expressed his concerns, stating, “Tracey is worried that we’re going to lose the house. If we do, we do. There’s nothing I can do about that.”

Looking Ahead to the Championship

The PDC World Darts Championship began on December 11, with King qualifying for the first time in three years. His return comes after finishing fourth on the second-tier Challenge Tour, and with increased prize money in the 2025/26 tournament, even first-round losers will take home £15,000.

If King wins his match against White, he could earn at least £25,000. This financial boost is especially welcomed after his recent challenges, providing hope for better times ahead.

A Message to Young Players

In light of his experiences, King aims to guide younger players. He wishes to prevent them from making the same mistakes he did, especially concerning tax obligations. He stated, “My message is: Don’t do what I did. Don’t hide your head in the sand when you realize you’re in a bit of a slump with HMRC.”
