Severe wind and rainfall have wreaked havoc in the Upper Wenatchee Valley, impacting thousands of households and prompting emergency responses. Chelan County experienced significant power outages, leaving around 11,000 residents without electricity on Thursday morning.
Weather Conditions and Flooding
Weather stations reported over 0.4 inches of rain on Wednesday, accompanied by wind gusts reaching 60 mph. This combination of factors led to swollen waterways throughout the Wenatchee Valley. The Wenatchee River at Peshastin reached 15.25 feet, marking the onset of its major flood stage.
Emergency Response and Safety Alerts
As conditions worsened, Chelan County Emergency Management urged residents to exercise caution near creeks and rivers. A public safety alert was issued, advising residents to avoid travel until conditions improved.
- Power outages affected 10,946 customers as of Thursday morning.
- Emergency rescue teams responded to two water rescues involving homes that were surrounded by floodwaters.
- A Red Cross emergency shelter was planned for Cashmere.
Impact on Travel and Local Infrastructure
Major routes in the area experienced closures, including Stevens Pass and Blewett Pass. Roads such as Chumstick Highway, North Road, and East Leavenworth Road became impassable due to fallen trees and debris.

- A tree limb struck a vehicle on Highway 207, injuring a driver.
- Power outages led to traffic light failures along Highway 2 from Cashmere to Leavenworth.
- Portions of East Leavenworth Road were closed due to rising water levels.
School Closures and Public Access
The Cascade School District, serving more than 1,200 students, canceled classes and events in response to the severe weather. Additionally, the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest has suspended public access to the Wenatchee River Ranger District until further notice.
