Winter Storm Alert: Snow to Impact Columbus and Central Ohio Soon

The upcoming winter weather is expected to bring significant snowfall to Columbus and central Ohio. Residents should prepare for two separate weather systems poised to affect the area.

Winter Storm Alert: Snow to Impact Columbus and Central Ohio Soon

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a winter storm watch for multiple counties in central Ohio. This includes Franklin, Licking, Preble, Montgomery, Greene, Fayette, Pickaway, Fairfield, and Hocking. The watch will take effect on Saturday, December 13, and extend until Sunday morning, December 14.

Snowfall Forecast

  • December 12: Chance of snow in the morning, with minor accumulation possible.
  • December 13: Anticipated snowfall of 3 to 5 inches, with potential complications for travel.
  • December 14: Residual snowfall and cold temperatures, with highs barely reaching 18 degrees.

Forecasts indicate that the snowfall will likely start overnight on December 12 and continue through the weekend. On the morning of December 12, residents should expect some snow, which could impact the morning commute.

Impact of La Niña

This winter’s weather patterns are heavily influenced by the La Niña phenomenon. According to the Climate Prediction Center, La Niña conditions are expected to last until February 2026, bringing colder weather to Ohio. This can lead to increased lake-effect snow in northern parts of the state.

Polar Vortex Influence

The polar vortex is also set to play a significant role this winter. AccuWeather reports that dangerously cold air from northwestern Canada is on its way to the central and eastern U.S. This surge of frigid air could bring extreme temperatures, contributing to the weather volatility expected over the coming weeks.

As the region braces for these conditions, residents are urged to monitor updates and exercise caution when traveling. The forecast indicates a pattern of cold snaps interspersed with occasional snowfall, typical of La Niña winters.
