Yankees’ Brian Cashman Admits Inaction at Winter Meetings: ‘No Progress Made’

During the 2025 MLB Winter Meetings in Orlando, Florida, significant developments were anticipated but largely fizzled out. While teams like the Philadelphia Phillies and Los Angeles Dodgers made headlines with key signings, much of the excitement remained unrealized as the meetings progressed.
Yankees’ Brian Cashman Admits Inaction at Winter Meetings
New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman expressed his disappointment regarding the lack of progress during his time in Orlando. Speaking to reporters, Cashman commented on the slow pace of the free agency market. He noted that, despite some promising conversations, the Yankees had “not accomplished anything” significant during the meetings.
Highlights of the Winter Meetings
- Kyle Schwarber re-signed with the Philadelphia Phillies for five years, totaling $150 million.
- Edwin Díaz signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers for three years, worth $69 million.
Cashman described the current market as being at “glacial speed.” He indicated that the team has struggled to align with the demands set by agents and other teams in transfer talks. “Don’t like the asks coming our way,” he stated, citing the challenges he faced in negotiations.
Future Prospects for the Yankees
Unlike last offseason, when the Yankees were hindered by their pursuit of Juan Soto, Cashman explained they now have the flexibility to explore other options while waiting on Cody Bellinger. He reassured that the team’s strategy wouldn’t be hampered by whether Bellinger joins or not, as his expected contract would differ significantly from Soto’s.
The Yankees are prepared to enter the upcoming spring training with young prospects Jasson Domínguez and Spencer Jones contending for the left field position. Cashman, however, remains cautious, noting that their inactivity should not be viewed negatively at this stage. He said, “We haven’t ‘lost’ out on any players,” referencing their lack of bids on top free agents like Devin Williams and Díaz.
Challenges Ahead
Cashman concluded by addressing the heavy financial commitments already in place for the franchise. While the Yankees are known for their aggressiveness in the market, the constraints created by existing contracts make it essential to navigate carefully. “Everything adds up. Everything counts,” Cashman articulated, emphasizing the need for a balanced approach.
As the Yankees look ahead to the approaching 2025 season, they still have ample time to strategize before Opening Day. However, fans remain anxious as they observe rival teams making moves, while New York has yet to show significant action during this offseason.
