Mohammad Rasoulof Leads Kerala Jury; Sissako Honored, ‘Palestine 36’ Festival Opens

The 30th International Film Festival of Kerala is set to begin soon in Thiruvananthapuram, highlighting a diverse array of global cinema. This year, the festival announces several key figures taking center stage in both its jury and opening night film.

Mohammad Rasoulof Chairs the Jury

Acclaimed Iranian filmmaker Mohammad Rasoulof has been appointed as the jury chair for the international competition. Rasoulof, currently in exile due to legal issues in Iran, will head a jury that includes:

  • Ángela Molina (Spain)
  • Bùi Thạc Chuyên (Vietnam)
  • Edmund Yeo (Malaysia)
  • Sandhya Suri (UK/India)

‘Palestine 36’ Opens the Festival

The festival will kick off with the screening of “Palestine 36,” directed by Palestinian filmmaker Annemarie Jacir. This film is expected to draw significant attention, setting the tone for the festival.

Lifetime Achievement Award for Abderrahmane Sissako

Mauritanian filmmaker Abderrahmane Sissako is slated to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award at this year’s event. This prestigious honor recognizes filmmakers who have made significant contributions to the cinematic arts.

During the festival, five notable films by Sissako will be showcased:

  • Life on Earth (1999)
  • Waiting for Happiness (2002)
  • Bamako (2006)
  • Timbuktu (2014)
  • Black Tea (2024)

A Legacy of Recognition

The Lifetime Achievement Award has been a part of the festival since 2009, with its first recipient being Mrinal Sen. This honor continues to celebrate filmmakers who have significantly impacted the film industry.
