Matthew Alder Charged in Fatal 2024 Shooting of Utah ‘No Kings’ Protester

A safety volunteer in Utah has been charged with manslaughter following a tragic incident during a “No Kings” protest last June. Matthew Alder allegedly shot and killed Arthur Folasa Ah Loo while trying to protect the crowd from a perceived threat.

Details of the Incident

On the day of the protest in Salt Lake City, Alder fired three shots, fearing an individual named Arturo Roberto Gamboa was preparing for a mass shooting. Gamboa was seen assembling an AR-15 rifle near the rally.

While Alder had legal permission to carry a firearm and use lethal force against threats, his third shot, which struck Ah Loo, was deemed reckless. Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill explained that firing over the heads of protesters constituted a crime. “If it is reckless, it is manslaughter,” Gill noted during a press conference.

Victim and Community Response

Arthur Folasa Ah Loo, recognized as Afa, was a celebrated fashion designer and a former contestant on “Project Runway.” He was known for advocating for artists from the Pacific Islands. Following the tragedy, his widow, Laura Ah Loo, expressed that the decision to charge Alder was “moral and just.”

Laura described her late husband as “an incredible father, advocate, creative and champion for others.” The pain from his loss has been profound, affecting her and their family significantly.

Legal Context and Consequences

Utah laws permit open carry of firearms, meaning legal firearm owners can carry guns publicly. Although Gamboa was initially arrested for his actions, he will not face charges according to prosecutors. They stated there was insufficient evidence to link him to any criminal conduct, despite his behavior being considered alarming.

Gamboa’s attorney, Greg Skordas, clarified that Gamboa had his rifle pointed at the ground during the incident. Alder claimed he fired at Gamboa because the latter moved toward the crowd without responding to his commands.

Background on the “No Kings” Protests

The “No Kings” protests were part of a series of nationwide demonstrations opposing the administration of former President Donald Trump. These protests highlighted concerns regarding authoritarianism and anti-democratic actions.

As the case progresses, the community continues to seek justice and accountability in light of Ah Loo’s death.
