Kelly Osbourne Remembers Birmingham’s Special Place in Her Father’s Heart

In a heartfelt tribute, Birmingham honored music legend Ozzy Osbourne by awarding him the city’s highest civic honor on what would have been his 77th birthday. His daughter, Kelly Osbourne, accepted the prestigious Lord Mayor’s Award from Deputy Lord Mayor Ken Wood on her father’s behalf.
Tributes from Family and Fans
At the private ceremony, Kelly received the city’s books of condolence. These books contain thousands of messages written by fans following Ozzy’s passing in July. Kelly expressed her emotions during the event, stating, “Birmingham is so special to him, and never in my wildest dreams did I expect the outpouring of love that we received.” She emphasized the unique connection her father had with the city, saying, “There is no place like Brum.”
Sharon Osbourne, Ozzy’s wife of 43 years, paid homage on social media, posting, “I will never let go of your hand until I see you on the other side.” She celebrated the legacy of her husband, remembering the day he was born.
Ozzy Osbourne’s Impact on Birmingham
The Lord Mayor’s Award recognizes exceptional achievements and services to the people of Birmingham. Ozzy Osbourne was celebrated for his significant contribution to the city’s cultural and musical identity. Born in Aston, he rose to global fame as the lead vocalist of the iconic heavy metal band Black Sabbath and enjoyed a successful solo career.
Kelly highlighted her father’s humility, describing him as “the people’s person” who never forgot his roots. “He loved what he did so much, entertaining and making people happy,” she said. “He showed the world that you can be a boy from Aston and be everything.”
Community Support and Future Memorials
On the day of the ceremony, tributes to Ozzy adorned the Black Sabbath Bridge on Broad Street. Kelly proposed further memorials, suggesting the possibility of naming the airport after him. “He deserves that so much,” she noted. “I would purposely fly into Ozzy Osbourne Airport every single time.”
This recognition comes after all the members of Black Sabbath were granted the Freedom of the City of Birmingham, coinciding with their farewell concert at Villa Park on July 5.
A Bittersweet Moment
While accepting the award, Kelly reflected on the bittersweet nature of the occasion. “I wish my father was here to receive this award,” she stated. “It was one of his proudest moments.” She acknowledged that Ozzy had been aware of this honor before his death. The Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Councillor Zafar Iqbal MBE, affirmed Ozzy’s lasting legacy, stating, “He never forgot his Brummie roots, so I am honored to present the award to his family.”
As Birmingham remembers Ozzy Osbourne, his legacy as a beloved figure and cultural icon endures. His contributions will forever remain a source of pride for the city and its people.
