Salt Lake County Acquires 60 Acres to Expand Popular Utah Trail

The Bonneville Shoreline Trail in Salt Lake County is set to expand thanks to a new land acquisition. County leaders approved the purchase of 60 acres south of Emigration Canyon, enhancing access to this popular outdoor trail.
Details of the Land Acquisition
The Salt Lake County Council voted unanimously to allocate $180,000 from the open space trust fund for this purchase. The land, located near 3085 E. Sherwood Drive, is situated close to the East Bench neighborhood of Salt Lake City. This acquisition aims to fill a significant gap in the trail network, allowing hikers and outdoor enthusiasts to explore more naturally without navigating through residential areas.
Benefits of the Expansion
- Increased recreational opportunities for local residents.
- Enhanced connectivity for the Bonneville Shoreline Trail.
- Support for outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, and trail running.
Mayor Jenny Wilson emphasized the value of this opportunity, highlighting its affordability and importance for locals looking to enjoy outdoor spaces. “This gives people out walking their dogs or on their bike more room to explore,” she said.
Addressing Trail Gaps
While the Bonneville Shoreline Trail traverses much of the mountainous eastern region of the county, there remains a notable 5-mile gap, particularly south of Emigration Canyon. Currently, trail users must traverse through the East Bench neighborhood to reconnect with natural spaces near Jacks Peak Trailhead, closer to Parleys Canyon.
Julie Peck-Dabling, associate director of planning for Salt Lake County Parks and Recreation, explained that the landowner reached out to the county after receiving another cash offer. The owner was inclined to sell at a discount, wanting to maintain the land as open space, which led to the valuation of $186,000 for the purchase.
Community and Council Support
The acquisition garnered support from various local organizations, including the Salt Lake County Open Space Trust Fund Advisory Board and the Bonneville Shoreline Trail Committee. Salt Lake County Council members expressed their enthusiasm for the deal.
- Chairwoman Dea Theodore remarked on the opportunity’s significance.
- Councilwoman Suzanne Harrison noted the low price of $3,000 per acre as “ridiculously low.”
Although the completion timeline for this project remains unclear, Mayor Wilson remains optimistic. “This purchase is a step closer to a complete and connected Bonneville Shoreline Trail,” she asserted.
