Erin Jackson Secures Spot in 2026 Winter Olympics After Gold Medal Win

Erin Jackson has secured her place in the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina after a remarkable showing in the 500 meters. The gold medalist from the Beijing Olympics finished third at a recent World Cup event in Salt Lake City, completing the race in 37.15 seconds.
Milano Cortina Olympics and Erin Jackson
Jackson’s achievement comes just in time as the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics approach, now only 100 days away. This early qualification eases the pressure that the Olympic trials usually bring.
Previous Trials and Jackson’s Journey
In the 2022 trials, Jackson ranked first globally in the 500 meters but narrowly missed qualifying. She finished third during the trials after slipping during her race. However, she was granted a spot when Brittany Bowe, who secured the first position, opted out of the 500 meters. Ultimately, Jackson went on to win gold, while Bowe competed in longer distances.
Changes in Qualification Procedures
Following Jackson’s experience, U.S. Speed Skating revised its qualification rules. Now, any athlete who medals at the world championships can qualify by finishing in the top five at two World Cups. Alternatively, securing a podium spot at two World Cups also guarantees a team place.
Bowe expressed her support for these changes, emphasizing the importance of security for athletes who regularly perform well. “Hitting those benchmarks means you deserve a spot on the team,” she remarked.
