Ian Machado Garry Targets Islam Makhachev’s Streak, Aims for UFC Welterweight Domination

Ian Machado Garry is setting his sights on dethroning the reigning UFC welterweight champion, Islam Makhachev. To solidify his claim as the top contender, Garry aims to defeat Belal Muhammad in an upcoming match. This bout is pivotal for Garry, as he hopes to halt Makhachev’s impressive 16-fight winning streak.
Title Showdown at UFC
Islam Makhachev captured the welterweight title from Jack Della Maddalena on November 15, during UFC 322, which took place at Madison Square Garden. Garry, currently ranked sixth in the welterweight division, is scheduled to face the second-ranked Muhammad live on TNT Sports this weekend.
Garry’s Strategy and Aspirations
In an interview, Garry laid out his plan. He believes that a victory over Muhammad will make it clear that he deserves a title shot against Makhachev. He stated, “I want to stop Islam’s continuous win streak of 16. He’s never going to get to 17 because he’s going to face me next.”
Beyond Makhachev, Garry has other opponents in his sights. He expressed a desire to defend his title against Shavkat Rakhmonov, who handed him his first career loss at UFC 310 last December. “I need to prove to the world and to myself that I am just levels above him,” Garry noted.
Future Fights and Competitive Spirit
Garry’s ambitions extend to facing Carlos Prates in Brazil. He remarked, “I need to knock him out in Brazil, give him an opportunity to fight for my belt.” Garry is confident in his skills, stating, “I just don’t see him lasting very long,” indicating his powerful striking ability.
A Fighter’s Prime
At 28 years old, Garry believes he is at the beginning of his prime as a fighter. He asserts, “I’ve got domination on my mind,” leveraging both his youth and health as assets in his career. His confidence is bolstered by previous victories, including a unanimous decision win over Prates in April.
