Valour FC Suspends Operations in Canadian Premier League Shake-up

Valour FC, a founding member of the Canadian Premier League (CPL), has announced its decision to suspend operations. This Winnipeg-based team, under the ownership of the Winnipeg Football Club, has faced financial difficulties for several years.
Financial Struggles
In recent years, Valour FC’s financial health has been precarious. In April 2024, it was revealed that the club incurred a loss of $1.25 million in the previous year. Prior to that, in 2022, the organization reported a $950,000 loss. The Winnipeg Football Club opted not to include the soccer team in its financial records for 2025.
League Support and Operational Viability
To help sustain Valour FC, the Canadian Premier League provided financial support through loans to cover operating costs in 2024. The league had been actively seeking solutions to ensure the team’s viability, including engaging with potential investors and exploring various operational models.
In a statement, the CPL noted, “Investing wisely means focusing resources where they create the greatest long-term impact for the League and the game. After review, it became clear that there is no sustainable path forward for Valour FC at this time.”
End of Season and Future Implications
Valour FC finished the previous season in sixth place out of eight teams, with a record of 7 wins, 16 losses, and 5 draws. The club has committed to honoring all contracts for players and staff until the end of the year. Players with contracts extending beyond 2025 will either become free agents or return to their parent clubs.
- Players and staff will be provided contractual obligations until year-end.
- Ticket holders will receive refunds for their purchases.
Valour FC becomes the second team in the CPL to cease operations, following FC Edmonton, which folded after the 2022 season. Despite this setback, the CPL announced that the league will remain at eight teams in 2026 with the forthcoming addition of expansion franchise FC Supra du Québec.
This report highlights the significant challenges faced by Valour FC and reflects broader economic difficulties within the league.
