The 2026 World Cup marks a significant change, as it will feature 48 teams competing. Europe contributes one-third of these teams, with 12 nations already securing direct qualification. Four additional spots will be contested through UEFA’s qualification playoffs, scheduled for March 2026.

UEFA World Cup Playoff Structure

The UEFA playoffs consist of 16 teams divided into four pots. Each pot contains teams that will compete in two semifinal matches, followed by a final in each bracket. The four victors from these playoffs will advance to the World Cup, while the remaining teams will shift their focus to qualifying for the 2030 tournament.
