Commander Joe Whitt Jr. on Demotion: ‘I Expected It, Winning Is Key’

After a disappointing 44-22 loss to the Detroit Lions, the Washington Commanders are making significant changes to their coaching staff. Defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. has been demoted, with head coach Dan Quinn taking over defensive play calling. Whitt will continue to serve on the team but has adjusted his role.
Joe Whitt Jr. Comments on Demotion
In his first public remarks since the coaching change, Whitt admitted he anticipated the decision. “I understood it. And I expected it,” he stated. Whitt emphasized the importance of winning, saying, “It’s about winning and playing well, and we haven’t done that.”
Commanders’ Defensive Struggles
The Commanders currently hold a 3-7 record this season. They have lost four straight games, each by significant margins. The problems have primarily centered around a struggling defense.
- Tied for the most completions of 20-plus yards in the NFL: 36
- Most passing yards per attempt: 8.4
- Average of 151.8 rushing yards allowed per game over the last five losses
These statistics led to Quinn’s decision to change the defensive leadership. He referenced a lack of cohesion and effectiveness in the defense as the primary reasons for this shift.
Coaching Adjustments Ahead of Dolphins Game
In preparation for their upcoming Week 11 game against the Miami Dolphins, Quinn and Whitt have been implementing various strategies. Changes have included simplifying play calls and adjusting personnel. Whitt will also move from the booth to the sideline to improve communication during the game.
Quinn acknowledged past lessons learned as a head coach, particularly the importance of delegation. He aims to strike a balance and remain connected to all aspects of the team, relying on his assistants for specific areas.
Focus on Immediate Future
Both Quinn and Whitt confirmed they are not focusing on long-term positions within the team right now. Their priority is winning the upcoming game against the Dolphins. “Not worried about that now,” Whitt said. “Just worried about winning this game.”
The Commanders hope that these changes will lead to improved performances and a potential shift in momentum as the season progresses.
