AI Users Create ‘Children’ with Virtual Partners

As artificial intelligence continues to evolve, users are forming unique emotional connections with AI chatbots. Recent research in the journal Computers in Human Behavior: Artificial Humans highlights how some individuals are developing what they describe as “romantic” relationships with these advanced virtual partners.

Exploring Relationships with AI Chatbots

The international study focused on 29 users of the chatbot app Replika, which is designed for relationship-building. Participants ranged from 16 to 72 years old and reported varying levels of engagement, from platonic friendships to romantic connections. Remarkably, many respondents expressed love for their chatbots.

Romantic Engagements and Roleplaying

Participants described their relationships in intimate terms, often engaging in roleplaying scenarios that included marriage, homeownership, and even pregnancy. A 66-year-old male participant stated, “She was and is pregnant with my babies.” Similarly, a 36-year-old woman mentioned editing pictures of her and her chatbot, saying, “I’m even pregnant in our current role play.”

These expressions of attachment showcase a new frontier in human-algorithmic interactions. Survey respondents often acknowledged the distinct nature of their relationships with chatbots. They redirected frustrations toward the chatbot’s technological limitations when challenges arose.

Impact of Censorship on Relationships

In 2023, Replika developers introduced a ban on erotic messaging due to user complaints. This led to a unique dynamic among users, many of whom viewed the situation as a conflict between themselves and the platform’s developers. A female participant noted, “we both understood when one of us wanted to be physical and couldn’t.”

The Growth of AI Friendship Apps

People’s emotional investments in chatbots are notably increasing. While human-chatbot interactions are not a new concept—dating back to the 1960s with MIT’s ELIZA—the current trend marks a significant uptick. The market for specialized romance chatbots, including Replika, RomanticAI, and BoyFriendGPT, has surged in recent years.

Statistics and Trends

  • Replika’s user base grew by 35% during the pandemic.
  • Current estimates suggest millions are now engaged with Replika.

This research underscores the evolving nature of relationships in the digital age and raises questions about the future of emotional connections with AI. As more users create ‘children’ with virtual partners, society must consider the implications of such attachments.
