Shifting Depth Chart and Role
Peoples entered the season with high expectations, drawing comparisons to former star J.K. Dobbins. However, a lackluster start against Texas, where he managed only 20 yards on 10 carries, opened the door for fellow freshman Bo Jackson. Jackson swiftly moved up the depth chart, while another freshman, Isaiah West, has also gained recognition, being established as the No. 2 running back.

Despite this reduced role, Peoples has remained optimistic. He emphasizes a team-oriented mindset, prioritizing the success of the Buckeyes over his personal performance. “It’s definitely been an adjustment,” he stated. “But it’s good to see the team is flourishing.”
Despite being lower on the depth chart compared to last year, Peoples has logged more snaps than in 2024. While Jackson and West have been effective, averaging 6.45 and 5.21 yards per carry respectively, Peoples maintains a solid 4.75 yards per carry average. His persistence has kept him in the running back rotation, as the Buckeyes have shifted to a four-man approach.
Areas of Skill and Improvement
Peoples has focused on expanding his football capabilities. Approximately half of his playing time has come on passing plays. He has caught four passes in the last three games, demonstrating his ability to contribute beyond traditional running back roles.
“I’ve always had good hands,” Peoples mentioned. “Moving me in that area is something they’ve done more this year.” His experience as a former wide receiver enhances his versatility, allowing him to be effective in the passing game.
Challenges in Offensive Performance
Despite his skills, explosive runs have been scarce. Apart from two late-game runs against Minnesota, he has not surpassed an 11-yard rush in Big Ten play. Peoples acknowledges his eagerness to make big plays, yet understands the need to stay grounded and take each play as it comes.
“Every time you want to be like, ‘Man, I gotta strike,’” he reflected. “But having your mind like that can really throw you off your game.” By staying focused, he aims to maximize every opportunity, regardless of limited carries.
Looking Ahead
As Ohio State’s season progresses, Peoples remains confident about his potential contributions. With several key games ahead, he emphasizes continuous improvement. “I believe I’m navigating through the ups and downs and putting my best foot forward each Saturday,” he stated.
Feeling driven, he reflects on the available opportunities. “We got a lot of football left,” he affirmed, looking forward to making an impact. “I came here to contribute to this team, and every time I’m in there, I’m giving it my all.”
