Hansen, Prendergast Lead Ireland Against Australia

In a significant shift for their autumn international match, Ireland has appointed Mack Hansen as full-back against Australia. This game is set to take place at the Aviva Stadium on Saturday. The 27-year-old Hansen is making a comeback after recovering from a foot injury sustained during Connacht’s match against the Bulls in the United Rugby Championship.

Head coach Andy Farrell has also selected Sam Prendergast at fly-half, choosing him over Jack Crowley. Center Stuart McCloskey returns to the side after a groin injury ruled him out of last week’s victory over Japan.
Key Changes in the Starting Line-up
Farrell’s starting lineup features nine changes from the team that previously beat Japan with a score of 41-10. Notably, prop Paddy McCarthy is set for his first Test start following a successful debut against the All Blacks and a try in the last match against Japan.

- Sam Prendergast: Starting at fly-half
- Stuart McCloskey: Returns from injury
- Paddy McCarthy: First Test start
Hansen’s selection is particularly interesting as he has never started for Ireland in the full-back position, although he has played there for Connacht in his last four appearances. With regular full-back Hugo Keenan and Jamie Osborne, who suffered a shoulder injury, sidelined, Hansen is ready to showcase his skills in this unfamiliar role.
Farrell expressed confidence in Hansen’s ability, highlighting his strong form during the Lions tour this summer. Despite the setback of his injury, the coach noted Hansen’s determination and intensive training as indicators of his readiness for this match. “He has proved to us that he’s up for this and ready and able,” Farrell shared with the media.
As Ireland prepares to face Australia, the emphasis will be on adapting to the changes and leveraging the strengths of these players. The upcoming match promises to be a critical test for the team as they aim to continue their winning streak.
