The USS Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group has officially joined operations within the U.S. Southern Command area of responsibility (USSOUTHCOM AOR) as of November 11. This significant deployment follows directives aimed at combating transnational criminal organizations and narco-terrorism.
Purpose of Deployment
Secretary of War Pete Hegseth initiated the mission of the Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group to enhance U.S. efforts against illicit activities threatening national security. Chief Pentagon Spokesperson Sean Parnell emphasized that this increased military presence aims to detect and disrupt criminal networks affecting the Western Hemisphere.
Operational Capabilities
The USS Gerald R. Ford, the largest aircraft carrier globally, carries over 4,000 sailors and numerous tactical aircraft. This first-in-class carrier enables operations both day and night, facilitating the launch and recovery of fixed-wing aircraft efficiently.
- Carrier Air Wing Eight: The group includes nine embarked squadrons with F/A-18E/F Super Hornets and other advanced aircraft.
- Surface Combatants: The group features the guided-missile destroyers USS Bainbridge and USS Mahan, equipped with Aegis Combat Systems.
- Support Units: Additional support from the integrated air and missile defense command ship, USS Winston S. Churchill.
Joint Task Force Collaboration
The Gerald R. Ford Strike Group will work alongside existing forces, including the Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group, under a collaborative Joint Task Force. This initiative aims to dismantle criminal networks exploiting borders and maritime areas.
Security Region Overview
USSOUTHCOM’s area of responsibility encompasses 31 countries and 12 dependencies, representing about one-sixth of global land assigned to regional commands. The region includes Latin America, adjacent waters, and the Caribbean.
