U of T Honors Remembrance Day on All Campuses Nov. 11

The University of Toronto (U of T) will commemorate Remembrance Day on November 11, 2023. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. Events will take place across all three campuses to honor veterans and soldiers from past conflicts.
U of T’s Commitment to Remembrance Day
Members of the U of T community are encouraged to attend. The university will also lower flags to half-mast to recognize the contributions of students, faculty, staff, and alumni who have served in the military.
Events at Each Campus
Various ceremonies will occur at U of T St. George, U of T Scarborough, and U of T Mississauga. Here are the details for each location:

U of T St. George
The Service of Remembrance will be held at Soldiers’ Tower. The schedule is as follows:
- 10:10 a.m.: Carillon recital by composer Naoko Tsujita
- 10:30 a.m.: Official ceremony begins
- The program includes a land acknowledgment, reflections, performances, and the recitation of “In Flanders Fields” by John McCrae.
Representatives from the university and the community will lay wreaths. U of T President Melanie Woodin and local MP Chrystia Freeland will attend.

U of T Scarborough
The ceremony will start at 10:40 a.m. in The Meeting Place, Science Wing. Featured activities include:
- Wreath laying and a moment of silence
- Performances by the UTSC Concert Band and Concert Choir & String Orchestra
- Participation of the Highland Creek Colour Guard for the first time
Linda Johnston, U of T’s vice-president and principal, will be present to speak at the ceremony.

U of T Mississauga
The Service of Remembrance will take place outside the Davis Building at 10:45 a.m. The ceremony will include:
- A reading of “In Flanders Fields”
- A brief ceremony lasting approximately 20 minutes
Alexandra Gillespie, U of T vice-president and principal, will deliver remarks and lay a wreath.
These ceremonies will provide an opportunity for the U of T community to come together in remembrance of those who served their country.
