Fire Crews Combat Tongariro Blaze with Notable Progress

An extensive fire in Tongariro National Park has caused significant damage, burning through more than 2,800 hectares since its outbreak on November 10, 2025. Recent rainfall has aided firefighting efforts, with an observational flight detecting no visible fire signs after the rain.
Progress in Combating the Tongariro Blaze
Incident controller Nigel Dravitzki reported that the rainfall has been vital in suppressing the fire. Ground crews have been working diligently, reinforcing containment lines. “This is very good news,” Dravitzki stated, highlighting the role of Fire and Emergency’s specialist drone crews using thermal imaging to locate hotspots.
Evacuations and Road Closures
Evacuated residents, including those from Whakapapa Village, were allowed to return home, but restrictions remain for businesses in the area. New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) announced likely closures of State Highways 47 and 48 between SH4 and State Highway 46 over the next two days.
Biodiversity Concerns
Damian Coutts, the Department of Conservation’s central North Island regional director, expressed concern for biodiversity damage. He noted that key visitor sites like Mangatepopo Road end and Mangatepopo Hut had been spared. Investigations are ongoing regarding the fire’s origin.
Rāhui Implemented for Recovery and Healing
In response to the fire, Ngāti Hikairo ki Tongariro has enforced two rāhui (restrictions). The first affects the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, allowing recovery time for the land. The second applies to charred regions, encouraging natural regrowth.
Emergency Response Efforts
- 15 helicopters and 5 planes are ready to assist in firefighting.
- Fire and Emergency New Zealand commends ground and air crews for their quick response.
- Minister of Conservation Tama Potaka described the devastation to conservation land as “confronting.”
Ruapehu District Mayor Weston Kirton characterized the fire as an “emergency situation.” He urged tourists to avoid the park, emphasizing the ongoing dangers and the scale of damage. The fire’s rapid expansion, initially thought to cover 100 hectares, has raised alarms due to its current size.
Authorities continue to investigate the potential cause of the fire, as speculation points to activities near State Highway 47. The police are collaborating with fire crews to uncover more details.
As conditions improve, firefighting efforts continue, but officials stress the need for caution and respect for safety measures in the area.
