Asda Driver’s Remark Leaves Customer Feeling Degraded

A recent incident involving an Asda delivery driver has left a customer feeling degraded and embarrassed. Necati Ayhan, a 22-year-old man with disabilities, reported that the driver questioned his condition during a delivery to his home in Southport on October 31.

Incident Overview

Necati had arranged for his groceries to be delivered to his flat on Lord Street. When the driver arrived, he requested help carrying the shopping up the stairs. However, due to his disabilities—fibromyalgia, autism, and other health issues—Necati was unable to assist.

Unacceptable Comment

During the delivery, Necati overheard the driver say, “disabled my ae,” which prompted him to confront the driver. In a recorded exchange, Necati asked why the driver made that comment. The driver replied, “You don’t look disabled to me,” asserting that he could judge Necati’s condition.

Response and Complaint

Following the incident, Necati requested the driver to return the groceries to the store. He later traveled to the Central 12 store by taxi and formally lodged a complaint about the driver’s behavior. As compensation for his troubles, he received a £30 voucher.

Feelings of Degradation

  • Necati expressed feeling degraded and embarrassed by the driver’s remarks.
  • He emphasized the importance of addressing the issue, highlighting that judgments about disabilities are often misguided.
  • Necati claimed that if he were in a wheelchair, the driver’s attitude would have likely been different.

Health Background

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition characterized by widespread pain, stiffness, and cognitive difficulties. Despite having mobility issues, Necati uses a wheelchair when out but does not require it at home.

Asda’s Response

An Asda spokesperson confirmed they are investigating the incident as a priority, acknowledging Necati’s complaint and concerns.

Necati Ayhan’s experience serves as a reminder of the need for sensitivity and understanding towards individuals with disabilities. Ensuring proper training for delivery personnel can prevent further occurrences of such degrading treatment.
