Warnings of Reduced Air Travel
During an appearance on CNN, Buttigieg stated, “You’re going to see air travel be reduced to a trickle.” He highlighted concerns that many travelers may struggle to return home for Thanksgiving later this month. “If this thing doesn’t open back up, many of them are not going to be able to get on an airplane,” he cautioned.
Impact on Flight Capacity
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has started to implement measures in anticipation of reduced air travel. As of last week, it announced plans to cut flight capacity by:
- 6% this weekend
- 10% by next weekend
These cuts will affect 40 of the busiest airports in the United States. Although international flights are not currently included in these reductions, some airlines might still cancel such flights.
Challenges for Air Traffic Controllers
Compounding the issue, air traffic controllers are reportedly experiencing fatigue and are choosing not to work due to the ongoing shutdown. The lack of pay during this period has led to concerns over staffing and safety within the air travel sector.

In response to the staffing crisis, Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth proposed that military air traffic controllers assist at civilian airports. However, this offer was declined, as military controllers are not certified for civilian air traffic management.
