Fabio Quartararo Thrives in Portimao Sprint with Intense Braking, Reduced Power

Fabio Quartararo showcased his skills at the Portimao MotoGP Sprint, overcoming early challenges to secure a notable finish. After a tough start, Quartararo climbed from 13th place on Friday to third in Saturday’s qualifying session.

Impressive Performance in Portimao Sprint

During the Sprint, Quartararo maintained a solid fourth position throughout the race. While he couldn’t match the top three—Alex Marquez, Marco Bezzecchi, and Pedro Acosta—he expertly managed his tyres to fend off competition from factory Ducati riders Francesco Bagnaia and Fabio di Giannantonio.

Key Strategies for Success

One of the pivotal changes for Quartararo was his switch to a hard front tyre, which significantly improved his braking capability. “I’m a hard braker, and I wanted more support on the front to be able to brake a bit harder,” he stated.

  • Switch to Hard Front Tyre: Enhanced braking performance.
  • Reduced Engine Output: Stabilized the M1’s handling, particularly in corners.

Quartararo noted the importance of adjusting engine power. “Sometimes we want to increase power in some corners, but our bike doesn’t accept it. It just shakes and spins,” he explained. The reduced power allowed him to maintain better control over the bike.

Race Dynamics and Future Outlook

Despite finishing five seconds behind race winner Alex Marquez, Quartararo’s performance was commendable. He finished nearly nine seconds ahead of the next-best Yamaha rider, Jack Miller, who claimed 11th place.

Massimo Meregalli, the team director, praised Quartararo’s determination. “Fabio delivered an impressive turnaround… It’s a testament to his determination and ability to perform when it matters most,” Meregalli remarked.

As Quartararo looks forward to future races, he remains optimistic about further improving his performance. His approach and insights from the Portimao Sprint may serve as a foundation for continued success in subsequent MotoGP events.
