Michigan Opts for 2026 Home Opener Against Western Michigan, Not Germany

Michigan’s football program has confirmed that the 2026 home opener against Western Michigan will take place at Michigan Stadium, as originally planned. This decision comes after discussions regarding a potential relocation of the game to Deutsche Bank Park in Frankfurt, Germany.

Game Details

The Wolverines will host Western Michigan on September 5, 2026. Despite initial negotiations for an international matchup, fan feedback played a crucial role in keeping the event within Ann Arbor.

Statements from Officials

Michigan’s athletic director, Warde Manuel, stated that a comprehensive evaluation led to the conclusion that hosting the game at Michigan Stadium was preferable. “Based on the analysis of all the factors, we felt it was best to keep the game in Ann Arbor,” he mentioned.

International Game Considerations

Eintracht Frankfurt, a soccer club in Germany’s Bundesliga, was involved in the planning discussions. Despite this, Michigan has faced challenges, including a suspension of head coach Sherrone Moore for the season opener due to the NCAA’s ruling on a recent investigation.

Future International Opportunities

While the 2026 game will remain in Michigan, Manuel noted that the university is still interested in exploring future international games. “We have fans and alumni around the globe, many of whom are excited about attending a game on foreign soil,” he added.

Upcoming Home Schedule

With the confirmation of the Western Michigan game at Michigan Stadium, the Wolverines are set to enjoy a total of eight home games during the 2026 season.
