San Jose Sharks’ Top Draft Pick Suffers Serious Lower-Body Injury

Michael Misa, the San Jose Sharks’ highly regarded rookie center, is sidelined with a serious lower-body injury. This setback occurred during a morning skate at the Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle earlier this week. The Sharks confirmed that Misa has been placed on injured reserve and is now considered week-to-week.

Details of the Injury

Misa, just 18 years old, sustained the injury during a power play drill on Wednesday morning, just hours before the Sharks faced the Seattle Kraken. Head coach Ryan Warsofsky indicated that the injury arose during a puck battle, describing the situation as somewhat frustrating for the young player.

Expectations for Recovery

Warsofsky noted that while injuries are a part of a player’s career, Misa is understandably disappointed about missing games, especially so early in the season. Fortunately, the Sharks’ medical staff believes Misa’s recovery won’t take several months. This timeline is crucial as he is a candidate for Team Canada at the IIHF World Junior Championship starting on December 26 in Minnesota.

Impact on the Team

Misa has so far recorded three points in seven games for the Sharks. If he appears in ten NHL games this season, the first year of his entry-level contract will be activated. The Sharks, currently performing well with a record of 5-2-1 in their last eight games, have important matchups coming up against the Winnipeg Jets and the Florida Panthers.

Development Opportunities

Despite being off the ice, Misa will still have opportunities for development. Warsofsky mentioned that while Misa won’t receive reps, he can learn by watching experienced players in action and through team meetings. There’s an emphasis on ensuring he stays engaged during his recovery period.

Additional Player Updates

  • Zack Ostapchuk has been recalled from the Barracuda but will be a scratch against the Jets.
  • Ryan Reaves has returned to the lineup after recovering from a lower-body injury sustained during a game against the New Jersey Devils.
  • Sam Dickinson was recently scratched from the game to manage his ice time after playing in six of the last seven games.

The Sharks are preparing for a busy month, with 15 games scheduled over 29 days. As they navigate through their robust schedule, the health of their players, particularly Misa, will be vital to their ongoing performance this season.
